Alarming Failure Rates of Toyota UA80 (HP) Transmission: Detailed Shop Data and Model-Specific Risks

The Toyota and Lexus "HP automatic transmission" (UA80) has developed a problematic reputation due to frequent failures, notably in Highlander and Sienna models. Beginning in 2017, the UA80 was plagued with issues, especially that year, less so in 2018, but failures resumed in newer models. Problems typically begin with a faint whining noise on acceleration, escalating to grinding noises, shifting errors, and eventual total failure. The failure sequence is particularly important to detect early; the whining is subtle when cold but intensifies as the car warms up.   • RAV4 (2019 and up, non-hybrids, shares Camry transmission but lacks failure pattern)
  • 2023–2026 Highlander, which switched to a 4-cylinder turbo and new transmission The speaker questions why Toyota didn't adopt the RX's higher-quality transmission widely, as it is paired with the same engine.
