GF7 Motor Oil Standard: Key Testing Revisions and Requirements

The Sequence IX test uses a 2L turbocharged gasoline direct injection engine, measuring 170,000 ignition cycles per cylinder over four iterations. The GF7 revision now requires both new and used oil samples to pass, addressing findings from an SAE study showing oil additive packages can degrade with usage and affect LSPI protection. Maximum allowed events are 8 (per iteration) and average must not exceed 5.

Piston Deposits: Deposits on pistons can stick rings, causing blow-by and oil contamination. The Sequence IIIH uses a 3.6L port injected V6, operating at 137hp and 3900rpm, oil at 151°C, for 90 hours. The minimum piston cleanliness rating increased over standards: GF5 (3.7), GF6 (4.2), GF7 (4.6). GF7 requires no hot stuck rings and viscosity increase must not exceed 100%.

Chain Wear: Soot from incomplete combustion causes wear in timing chains, leading to elongation and cam timing shifts. Sequence X uses the same 2L turbo engine with increased ring gaps for excessive blow-by; alternating rich/low coolant and normal phases over 216 hours. Allowed timing chain length increase is reduced: GF6 (0.085%), GF7 (0.080%).

Fuel Economy: Sequence 6E assesses oils' fuel-saving capability using a 3.6L V6 across six varied conditions of RPM (695–2000), torque (20–105Nm), oil temp (35–115°C), and coolant (35–109°C), compared to a 20W-30 baseline. For example, GF6 0W-20 required 3.8% improvement; GF7 demands 4.3%. Brands like Mobil 1 may exceed these requirements.

The GF7 label certifies compliance with the new tests, though product formulations may or may not change, as companies aim to surpass industry benchmarks. GF7 ensures reliable engine protection against LSPI, piston deposits, chain wear, and enhances fuel economy.
