Congressman John Mullenar on China's Military, Economic, and Political Threats at the NATO Summit

Michigan Congressman John Mullenar, chairman of the House Select Committee on China, evaluates China's multifaceted threat during President Trump's visit to the NATO summit in Turkey. Secretary General Mark Ruda warns the alliance against being "naive about China" as Beijing advances its military, notably launching ballistic missiles from a nuclear-powered submarine into the Pacific Ocean and aiming for "a thousand nuclear warheads by 2030." Mullenar stresses the opacity of China's nuclear program and expresses concerns about the CCP enabling Iran and Russia. He notes the regime's authoritarian crackdown on independent voices and religious freedom, highlighted by the death of a Chinese economist who challenged official GDP data, which he attributes to the CCP's intolerance.

Discussing "elite capture," Mullenar points to the CCP's recruitment of business and political leaders, warning of its threat to US national security. He references family ties between Senator Mitch McConnell, Elaine Chao, and China, underscoring civil-military fusion and the need for transparency regarding such relationships. Mullenar calls for Elaine Chao to clarify her trip to Beijing and urges vigilance about US-China partnerships.

On agricultural trade, Bloomberg reports that China has purchased more US soybeans, with at least an additional five million dollars per month, under a White House agreement for "17 billion dollars in US agricultural products and at least 25 million tons of soybeans." Mullenar insists on strict accountability and verification of China's commitments, noting US soybeans face an extra 10% tariff compared to rivals.

Mullenar's op-ed asserts that "Xi Jinping's mandate to the People's Liberation Army" requires China's military to be "prepared by 2027 to take Taiwan by sheer military force." He warns that an invasion would devastate the global economy, with "10 trillion dollars of estimates" in losses, and urges maintaining the status quo across the Taiwan Strait. Mullenar emphasizes that the CCP has "never governed Taiwan" and hopes US and European nations will uphold peace in the Indo-Pacific.
