Emotion X1 — rear-linkage suspension undermines off-road promise
The speaker's central claim is that a single design decision for the Emotion X1—the use of a linkage-driven, centrally mounted coil-over shock routed through one rear linkage—removes much of the wheel's off-road appeal. The speaker acknowledges real advantages of the mono-shock approach—swappable shocks, selectable spring rates and tunable compression/rebound, and linkage geometry that can resist bottom-out—but warns that better damping cannot compensate for chassis twist or linkage play (pivots/bearings/bushings). They list multiple contributors to wobble that matter: tire pressure, geometry, weight distribution, speed, rider tension, suspension setup and chassis stiffness. Citing the P6 as an engineering statement (235V, a 4,200Wh battery, claimed 93mph top speed, 90mm of travel), the speaker notes that huge size/weight/price are tolerable there because of extreme speed and power—criteria the X1 does not meet for them.
Practical takeaway: the X1's rear-linkage mono-shock design narrows its strengths to tunability and experimentation but undermines confident off-road performance; the speaker would often prefer another wheel depending on reader use case and is more excited about two other upcoming wheels.
